DHS Allows Saudi Passengers To Speed Through Airport Security?

What is going on at the Department of Homeland Security? It began by buying enough weapons for a twenty year war; then it accepted without question or protest reports contending ordinary conservatives are terrorist threats; and now we learn that the DHS is planning to extended “trusted traveler” status to Saudi Arabian travelers. Maybe the DHS forgets what the rest of us remember: Fifteen Saudi travelers helped orchestrate and carry out the 9/11 attacks.

If this is news to you, that’s no surprise. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano didn’t announce this new policy to the news and Americans. Instead, she whispered it into place in January after meeting with the Saudi head of national security. The plan is that the Saudis – who support ultra-fundamentalist Wahhabi Islam at home and abroad – will have a direct role in putting Saudi citizens on the airline security fast track for entering America.  The only reason that the public is learning about this favor to the Saudis is that the Investigative Project on Terrorism learned about the plan through concerned sources and then published that knowledge on March 20.

The Saudis have joined a small handful of countries that are considered to be sufficiently trustworthy that their national security organizations can promise the DHS that vetted citizens do not pose a threat to the United States. The countries already on this short list are Canada, Mexico, South Korean, and the Netherlands. Even key U.S. allies such as Germany and France are not enrolled, while Israel is still in the process of implementing the program with the US.

Foreign nationals enrolled in the program can enter the country with almost no effort. When they arrive at an international airport, so long as they provide a passport and fingerprints, they can bypass customs entirely.

In justifying the DHS’s decision to give special entry privileges to Saudis, Napolitano made much of “the bond between the United States and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.” More than that, she claims that the new program increases American security:

By enhancing collaboration with the government of Saudi Arabia, we reaffirm our commitment to more effectively secure our two countries against evolving threats while facilitating legitimate trade and travel.

The theory is that, by weeding out low risk travelers, DHS and the TSA have more time to focus on high risk passengers. The DHS contends that even “trusted travelers” will still be subject to random searches, but many have voiced concerns that terrorists and drug cartels will very quickly learn how to exploit the program for their own advantage.

When George Bush was president, Democrats attacked the Saudis because they had bred the 9/11 terrorists, because they funded radical Islam all over the world, and because George Bush was an oilman and Saudis had oil. Now, suddenly, the Saudis are our best friends, so much so that we’re allowing their Wahhabi Islamist security agency to vet who can come into the U.S. with pre-approved security clearance. We can only hope that this doesn’t blow up in our faces – literally.
